The sun was low in the sky, and the air was getting steadily colder. A stand of skeletal trees cast long, broken shadows across the frostbitten garden, nearly hiding the solitary bench upon which Kade was settled. Scarfless, hatless, and mitten-free, Kade was attracting some strange looks from the few students that remained in the courtyard. A frigid wind ruffled the boy's hair, but he appeared too immersed in the novel in his lap to have noticed. However, if any of the students had dared to come closer, the would have noticed that the Ravenclaw's eyes were sealed tightly shut. Kade was fast asleep.
"Imperius! Im-per-i-us! Say it, boy!" bellowed a tall, burly male. The ten-year-old Kade shivered. "Say it!" "I-imperius?" stuttered the boy nervously, the unfamiliar Latin sounding garbled on his unpracticed tongue. "With feeling, like you mean it, stupid boy!" hollered the man, branding a long, greenish stick. Kade sighed, "Okay..." Softly, but with a slightly more commanding tone, the word issued from his mouth:"Imperius." "Now wave the damn wand when you say it, dumb ass." Kade glowered. I'll show him... "Imperius!" he shouted, pointing the stick at the man. Complete, total control. The little boy relished the new power.
His turquoise orbs still tightly sealed, Kade whispered, "Imperius." The wind turned another page of Kade's battered book.

The murmurs and whispers of young humans flew in the breeze, painting an almost dreary scene. Ghostly trees cast long dark shadows upon the frost bitten earth. The heavy clouds seemed to turn a light pink color as the sun drew closer to the frozen wasteland. The slight pitter-pat of feet echoed through the courtyard and the long, slender pillars attached to the feet were exposed, layered in goosebumps. The cotton clothe draped on the human was fluttering in the wind, trying to tear away from the tall, slender female's body. The brown skin that wrapped itself around this girl's frame was shivering. Her arms had no sleeves, and her neck bared no scarf, she was defenseless against the cold that was nipping at her core. The dark peach-fuzz adorning her crown was no protection against the cruel frost. The book bag draped across her shoulder was nearly empty, and only contained her wand and a few scraps of parchment.
Thin dark layers of skin held their place tightly across her eyes. Her non-makeup stained face was filled with pain, and her lips were clamped tightly together. She folded her arms across her chest and rubbed them softly. If I fell the pain, mama doesn't... If I feel the pain mama doesn't... If... She recited to herself. She released the grip on her limbs and dropped her hands to her sides, no longer walking. The lids adoring her orbs parted and she noticed that she was standing a few feet from a stone bench. She blinked and tilted her head a bit. The brown pools focused more and saw that there was a boy laying on the stone, reading. She resumed her gate and made her way to the bench. She stopped an inch away, and looked around. All of the seating areas had been occupied by students, most of them were necking. I need to sit down, maybe he will let me... She thought as she reached forward and tapped the lad on the shoulder. "Um, excuse me," she said nervously, with a slightly Jamaican/Dutch accent. "May I sit here?"

"Um, excuse me." A tap on the boy's shoulder startled him out of his dream. Turqouise eyes blinked immediately open, and reflexively, Kade swung out, narrowly missing a tall black girl who stood about an inch away from him. "Can I sit here?" she asked nervously. Annoyed and still a little startled, he said, "Damn! Don't stand so close to people!"
His voice, still husky with sleep, didn't have the desired frightening effect. His outburst had sounded gently chiding and offhand, possibly even flirtatious. He scowled and muttered grumpily, "Do whatever."

"Damn! Don't stand so close to people!" The boy said as he lashed out at the Hufflepuff. The girl jumped back a few centimeters, surprised by the actions of the boy. What in the world?... she thought. The boy was obviously not happy, and Zanelle knew it. Zanelle unclasped her jaws and was going to speak when the male interrupted."Do whatever." he said coldly. What a jerk... she scoffed a bit, and made her way over to the unoccupied half of the bench. She fixed her dress, and sat down softly. She crossed her legs and rubbed her foot, which was exposed to the elements, for she was not wearing shoes. She closed her eyes and continued to rub her feet. The paws were callused so much on the bottom that she could hardly peel pain in them any more. They were scared, and she felt the cold was nothing compared to the may things theses feet had endured. If I feel the pain, mama doesn't, don't forget that... she thought as she opened her lids once again to focus on the male. "If I woke you I'm sorry, I just needed to get off my feet." she said calmly.
*OOC* heh heh *nervous laughter* yeah, she doesn't wear shoes, unless its class time. heh...

The girl jumped back a centimeter or two at his outburst, and Kade was able to see her clearly. She was tall and slender, and her head was covered only by a dusting of dark hair. Kade wondered if she had shaved it on purpose, but said nothing. The girl's brown frame was shielded only by a cotton dress that was obviously African, but didn't appear to provide her with much heat, since she was shivering.
The girl seated herself, fixing her brown orbs on Kade. "If I woke you I'm sorry, I just needed to get off my feet," she said calmly. The Ravenclaw's orbs shifted to her feet, which were calloused but completely unshod. He looked back at the girl and muttered uncomfortably, "Sorry." The word stuck in his throat; it had been a long time since Kade had apologized to anyone. He focused his turquoise orbs on the girl and finally registered that she was shaking. That's a warning sign for hypothermia, provided his Ravenclaw mind helpfully of its own accord. Kade scowled at the knowledge. I definitely don't want to deal with Pomfrey later. Frowning, he asked the girl, "Do you want something warmer?"

Continuing to rub her callused paws, Zanelle watched the male reluctantly spoke to her."Do you want something warmer?" he asked coldly. She looked down at her feet, then back up at the brute. Parting her kissers she let a few soft, accented words escape. "No. I mustn't... But thank you for asking." Earth colored orbs focused completely on him, she tilted her head and thought, I wonder why he was sleeping, its really cold. Wouldn't the common room be better? She released her foot with one hand and rubbed her arm, feeling the goosebumps layering her skin. Thin layers of skin fluttered down over her brown souls, and then back to their natural position. Just a few more minutes, then I can go inside... She set her gaze upon the orange dress laying across her legs and asked What is your name? Mine is Zanelle."
*OOC* sorry so short...

Kade watched in silence as the girl gazed at her feet. "No, I mustn't," she said, "but thank you for asking." She lifted her gaze to stare unwaveringly at him, and Kade shifted uncomfortably. I shouldn't have said anything. Now she'll want to talk. Sure enough, the girl asked, "What is your name?" Kade scowled. "Mine is Zanelle," the girl went on. Realizing that he couldn't ignore her completely, Kade muttered, "Kade," and turned his back on her, not wanting to feel her eyes on him. Hopefully, she would fall silent at his failure to make futher conversation.
A wintry breeze blew across the courtyard, blowing the boy's open shirt backward. He grabbed quickly at the tails of the shirt, trying to keep it around his otherwise bare torso. The wind blew more strongly, and Kade pulled the shirt closer to his chest. It was a comical sight, appearing rather as if Kade was battling the wind. Finally, he scowled and began to button the shirt, carefully leaving the top two buttons loose. He allowed a quiet sigh to escape his lips, and he leaned back on the stone bench, a frown still upon his mouth. He glanced back at Zanelle. Why did she say she "musn't"? Is she being forced to stay outside? Finally, he deemed the girl's unusual situation to be none of his business and stared, frowning, across the cobblestones leading to the castle.
*ooc* End of thread... It kinda died.
