Kade smirked as he heard, "Finite Incantatem," muttered from behind him. He glanced back and watched detachedly as the Slytherin boy attempted to dull the throbbing pain from the only hex that had hit him. It looked like he'd been hit with Kade's third hex. The hex caused random flashes of pain that lasted somewhere between two and three minutes each, and waiting for the next ache was rather like Chinese water torture, minus the blindfold. It hurt, but it was stopped easily. The hex was actually a simple time modification on the first hex that the class had learned yesterday, and Kade hadn't figured out how to alter the counterspell yet. He was sure that the boy would locate it in the book within the next twenty seconds. Kade's advantage lay in the hope that the Slytherin wouldn't recognize the hex.

As he went back to searching for an air freshening spell, Kade noticed the girl beside him draw out her own wand. He wondered if she had found a way to dispense of the vile smell of burnt hair, but she pointed her wand at the Slytherin. Flitwick walked into the room just in time to witness the Hufflepuff mutter, "Aguamenti." More curiously than angrily, the professor squeaked, "Ms. Dillingham, what are you doing?" The girl made up some kind of ridiculous lie, and Flitwick said, "Kindly direct your wand away from Mr. Hughes," and waddled up to the chalkboard. Kade noticed that he'd made no effort to dry off the Slytherin who was currently dripping on the tiled floor. Neither had the professor paid any attention to the nasty smell filling the back of the room. Damn professor.

As Flitwick began calling role, Kade felt his tongue beginning to swell. He put his wand to his tongue, saying quietly around his rapidly growing tongue, "Finite Incantatem."His tongue didn't shrink, but it stopped expanding. The Ravenclaw frowned and set his mind to the problem. It didn't take long for him to figure it out. Swelling... it must be a form of Engorgio. As best as he could, he muttered the counterspell, and was relieved when his tongue shrank back to normal size. He glanced behind him at the Slytherin - Mr. Hughes? One glimpse of the look on the boy's face confirmed Kade's suspicions about the culprit. That was a fairly simple hex... he must have something else up his sleeve. Kade resolved to be a little more aware of any further attacks. Or prevent them... An idea sprang to mind, and Kade pulled out his wand as subtly as he could.

"Marvelous," squeaked Flitwick. "Everyone's here. Now, today we'll be practicing simple hexes. You will be paired with your deskmate, and you will refrain - Mr. Azha, what in the WORLD do you think you're doing?"

Mentally, Kade cursed himself for his stupidity. Of course Flitwick would notice Kade drawing his wand. After all, the professor would certainly have his eyes on the Hufflepuff next to Kade after her less-than-subtle charm. But still... Kade sat up a little straighter, completely collected. Cooly, in a tone tinged with confidence, he said, "Thank you for your concern, but there's no problem here." The 'sir' that was supposed to follow this statement was purposely left off. Flitwick puffed up his chest, prepared to show authority. "Mr. Azha, I believe - " Kade cut him off. "It's not an issue to be discussed now." Flitwick read the challenge in Kade's eyes and stared suspiciously at him for a moment. Seconds later, the professor squeaked, "Very well," and went on with his safety speech. Frowning, Kade settled gloomily into his chair, preparing to endure the remainder of the lesson.

I'm finally done and I'm really sorry but I don't have much time! :-[ next time i promise to post sooner!

Unfortunately as she watched Flitwick waddle up to his desk, the professor didn't notice the disgusting smell of the burned hair. She scowled to herself. Stupid professor. Quietly she waved her wand to create a sweet smelling odor to surround her and anyone within 2 feet of her. As the sweet smell began to cover the burnt hair smell, she inaudibly breathed a sigh of happiness.

Breaking the happy moment, she felt her eyes move to the back of her head. That fucking Slytherin! She reached for her wand and pointed it back wards at the annoying Slytherin. Titillando! She smiled at the thought of having this idiotic boy randomly begin laughing. Still feeling her eyes uncontrollably rolling to the top of her head, she let out a long mental sigh. Damn, he's good. Where the hell does he get these?, she thought as she tried Finite Incantatem. Luckily it did stop her eyes from continuing to roll. She thought for a moment before trying the spell again. Nothing. She racked her brains for a counterspell but couldn't think of one. Luckily she had stopped the spell when she could somewhat still see. She positioned her wand again at her eyes, and tried Finite again. She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw her eyes returning to their normal position.

Thinking this was enough, she quickly scribbled on a piece of parchment. Do you know that bastard? Satisfied that her loopy handwriting was somewhat legible, she tossed the note to the Ravenclaw. Sending, what she hoped, was a menacing glare over her shoulder, she quickly turned to try and pay attention to Flitwick.

Almost instantly, she could feel herself drowsing off from his boring lecture about the Vanishing Charm. As interesting and as useful as this charm could be, it was rivaling Professor Binns class in boringness. Most students had stopped paying attention awhile ago and were playing silent games with their desk partners. Just as she was about to pull out a sheet of music to work on, Flitwick's squeaky voice interrupted her action. " Mr. Hughes, would you demonstrate the Vanishing Charm?" Seizing the moment, she turned to look at the SLytherin and smirk. This'll be entertaining I hope.

Halfway through Flitwick's ridiculously detailed explanation of appropriate wand movement, a sweet vanilla scent began to permeate the stale, smoky air. Kade blinked, startled from his bored stupor. The smoky stench of hex-fire, combined with an odor reminiscent of his mother's cloying vanilla perfume - it was uncomfortably familiar to his olfactory glands. All that was missing was the cheap Muggle liquor. He cringed, remembering everything else that had usually accompanied that smell.

Flitwick made a particularly emphatic wave of his hands and asked someone a question, and Kade shoved the memories to the back of his mind. He stared at the professor and made a futile attempt to refocus his glazed eyes. The lecture was almost over, anyway. Soon they would be sent off to practice. Kade glanced covertly at his table partner. She was pointing her wand at the annoying Slytherin, but nothing was happening to him. Kade assumed that there must have been a built-in time restraint associated with the hex. The girl looked capable enough to pull something like that off. As he watched, she tore a scrap off her parchment and scribbled something on it. Distractedly, he wondered who she was going to pass the note to. There was a Hufflepuff girl up front who looked quite bitchy, and another group of girls behind her who were giggling over a pink slip of parchment. He scowled. They all looked like idiots. It would be just his luck to be stuck with an idiot for a Charms partner. Again.

Still reminiscing about the unpleasant experiences he had had last semester with idiots, Kade heard someone clearing their throat. A fourth year stood by the door, his hands clasped behind his back. When the rest of the class turned to look at him, he blushed and stammered, "Is a Mr. Felix Hughes here? He has an appointment." As an afterthought, the fourth year added, "He has to leave right away, sir." Flitwick blinked and looked around the room, finally squeaking, "You may go." Said Mr. Felix Hughes gave a jaunty grin and strode after the fourth year.

A ball of crinkled parchment landed on the empty sheet of paper in front of Kade. He blinked. What the hell...? The paper unfolded and plastered itself to the desk. The Ravenclaw's turquoise eyes appraised the paper suspisciously. Loopy, scrawling cursive that sprawled all over the scrap read, "Do you know that bastard?" Kade's eyes slid sideways. Sure enough, the girl was looking at him. The note had definitely come from her. He muttered in a low voice, "Why the fuck would I know him?" Flitwick coughed, and Kade looked up quickly. It would be terribly annoying if he had to face off with the professor again. The dwarfish professor made no comment about the wandering attentions of his class, but squeaked, "You may begin practicing with your table partner now. Introduce yourselves, if you haven't already, because you will be paired with your current table partner for the next nine classes."

Kade appraised the Hufflepuff beside him and decided to be civil to her for a day. She seemed annoying, but it wouldn't hurt to have a Charms partner that didn't hate him. He cleared his throat, and when he was sure she was paying attention to him, the Ravenclaw muttered, "Hey."

Still waiting for Mr. Hughes to burst out into random giggles, a nervous 4th year entered, "Is a Mr. Felix Hughes here? He has an appointment." Then he paused and added, "He has to leave right away, sir." That was all Layla heard because she was disappointed that his embarrassment would happen in class. Oh well, whenever it happens, he'll be embarrassed, she grinned at the thought of him randomly bursting into laughter during a meeting with Professor McGonagall. She looked back at Mr. Hughes back and watched him leave through the door.

"Why the fuck would I know him?" Layla was startled by the voice but quickly recovered. But before she answered, Flitwick coughed and the boy looked immediately up. She waited for a few seconds to let Flitwick focus on another misbehaving student. Just as he opened his mouth to say what ever he was suppose to say, she answered with a equally low and sarcastic voice, "Maybe he had a reason to randomly fucking annoy us." She looked up at the professor just in time to hear his instructions. "You may begin practicing with your table partner now. Introduce yourselves, if you haven't already, because you will be paired with your current table partner for the next nine classes."

She suppressed a groan. The Slytherin bastard was going to sit behind her for the next nine weeks! [i] I don't want to deal with his slimy ass every time we go to Charms.[/b] But then was reminded that the person sitting next to her was going to be her partner for the next nine classes too. He didn't seem annoying (like most people thought of her), just kind of a loner. He cleared his throat, and said, "Hey." Layla was almost surprised to hear him talk of his own free will and civilly. She remembered some people talking about him and his loner ways. Composing herself to be equally civil, she responded, "Hi." And then paused and added, " I'm Layla"

Kade watched as the girl's eyes narrowed. She was obviously pondering his voluntary introduction. The Ravenclaw waited for a single awkward second and, hearing no response, turned away and picked up his wand. He muttered a summoning charm, and the pillows came zooming towards him. "Hi," muttered the girl, just as the pillows landed on the desk. There was another pause, and she added, "I'm Layla." Kade inclined his head a fraction of an inch to acknowledge her statement, but said nothing.

Flitwick was now wandering amongst the rows of desks, berating students who hadn't begun setting up for hex practice. Hastily, Kade dropped the pillows into a roughly shaped square on the floor. He stood up, shoving his wand into the back pocket of his battered jeans as he did so, and flipped the textbook to the section on hexes.

Kade fastened his gaze on the girl - Layla - and gestured towards the pillows. "What are you waiting for?" he asked, not even trying to assume a falsely pleasant expression. Kade absolutely hated having to be the person upon whom the hexes were practiced first, and his awful mood did nothing to improve his opinion of this job. Still, he was trying to be nice to his Charms partner, and, as his mother had said, it was always ladies first. Scowling, Kade moved over to stand in front of the pillows, prepared to cast as many Protego charms as needed.

ooc] R A N T !! <to be deleted upon further notice> Bleh. It is a short post, and not-so-very good, but I refuse to change it. It was hard to write (I don't really know why, but it was!), and I do not think I can do better at this point in the thread. It is so very hard to write stuff when there are two conversations going on between the same people in the same post. I am so very confused.
